After torture testing a 4GB model at the Apple Store I decided to chance it, and so far it's worked out better than I'd expected. I only got this one because it was available as refurbished, but there wasn't a 8GB model available, so it would've cost me something like an extra $500 to go to a brand new 8GB machine. Do I regret only getting 4GB? Yes, sometimes. It's actually pretty responsive like this, largely a credit to the SSD. You're probably looking at that memory pressure bar graph and are thinking that this computer must be frustrating as hell to use, but to be honest, it isn't.

This is what a 13" rMBP with only 4GB of ram looks like doing a lot of heavy tasks (xCode, 3 browsers running, etc). It kinda shoots the resale value point dead as this old hardware will not be that appealing by the end of 2016. As such what is acceptable in today's systems could Change dramatically by 2016, meaning that hardware purchased today could end up looking very old by 2016. That is I would expect to see DDR 4 in Apples top end systems in 2015. The flip side of this is that 2015 will like usher in a new generation of RAM systems in personal computers. That might rub people the wrong way but usage patterns change over time so unless you like to make frequent computer purchases it is best to configure a purchase to offer the best chance of long term usability. I know many don't like the reasoning but still the best reason to max out RAM is that it can't be updated in the future. Almost everything becomes more demanding on RAM over time. I still believe the best argument for maxing out RAM in Apples machines is that you as a buyer can't see I tot the future.

Further laptops really aren't the place to be doing video editing professionally. As such I don't see it as a factor in deterring RAM needs. The professions don't seem to overlap that much.

That being said I did not get the impression that video editing was a professional pursuit here. This is certainly true, programmers often see their needs as paramount but the IDE world is slowly changing and is becoming more demanding of hardware.
